What You Can Do About Acne Scars

Acne is one thing, scars are another. Acne will eventually go away (really, it will). Scars, on the other hand, are a bit tougher to deal with.Doing things like picking at and popping pimples can definitely damage your skin and cause scarring. But sometimes, even if you're really careful with your skin, scars can still develop. Severe blemishes, those that are very inflamed, are more likely to scar. And for for some people, even minor blemishes cause scarring....Read Full Post read more..

Skin Bleaching Creams-Acne Scarring-Discoloration-Acne Lesion-Skin Types

Skin Bleaching Creams : What to Avoid

Skin bleaching creams are often used by women of color to help lighten up discolorations or unevenness. However, they are also used by a lot of other skin types of various colors for a variety of additional reasons.  One of them is acne scarring discoloration, which is brought about by the long term trauma caused by a deep acne lesion. The redness can linger for years actually, resulting in a sort of discoloration wherever the lesion used to be. In addition, you can also get the typical pitting and icepick look as well, which are depressions in the skin that are caused by a loss of tissue due to a  burst pore – many times you can cause this to be worse than it needs to because you may pop a zit and cause more trauma than necessary by doing it too early and rupturing the integrity of the localized skin. Skin bleaching and lightening creams are often used for red acne scars. However, in additiona to avoiding the typical “baddies” like parabens and other chemicals, you definitely want to avoid hydroquinone. Although it is the most effective chemical used for skin lightening, it has also been linked to the [...] read more..

Basal Cell Carcinomas-Precancerous Lesion-Cell Damage-Forehead

Have a Sore on Your Face that Won’t Heal? Get It Checked!

I just wanted to share my experience with a  basal cell carcinoma (recurring) that I’ve had on my forehead for a  few years now. For some reason, this precancerous lesion keeps popping up in the same spot when I have even a few unprotected hours in the sun (even sometimes with sunscreen on). I’ve come to the conclusion that the skin on my upper forehead is somehow damaged at the DNA level and is easily susceptible to sun damage and cell damage, and that is why it keeps happening. My theory is that I used to use a lot of chemicals and hair dyes on my head when I was younger and didn’t know better – chemical straighteners, perms, you name it. I think that these repeated chemical exposures really messed up my skin cells in these areas, and that is why the basal cell carcinomas (which are technically cancerous lesions, but not usually serious and easily treated) keep coming up in the exact same spots on my forehead over and over again. I wanted to share it because when I first noticed these coming up years ago, I thought that I had burned myself with my curling iron or [...] read more..

Dermoscopy Distinction of Eruptive Vellus Hair Cysts with Molluscum Contagiosum and Acne Lesions

Abstract: Eruptive vellus hair cysts are benign lesions that can be difficult to distinguish from other skin conditions, including molluscum contagiosum and acne vulgaris. Diagnosis can be corroborated with histopathology. We emphasize differing dermoscopy features to help distinguish eruptive vellus hair cysts from molluscum contagiosum or acne. Comparative analysis of adverse drug reactions to tetracyclines: results of a French national survey and review of the literature

Conclusions In the absence of markedly better efficacy against the various indications for tetracyclines, the minocycline benefit/risk ratio was clearly lower than that of doxycycline, and possibly those of lymecycline and metacycline. In light of these findings, minocycline should no longer be considered first-line therapy for inflammatory skin disorders, especially acne. An increased incidence of Propionibacterium acnes biofilms in acne vulgaris: a case–control study

Conclusions We have for the first time visualized different P. acnes phylotypes in macrocolonies/biofilms in sebaceous follicles of skin biopsies. Our results support the hypothesis that P. acnes can play a role in the pathogenesis of acne as acne samples showed a higher prevalence of follicular P. acnes colonization, both in terms of follicles containing P. acnes and the greater numbers of bacteria in macrocolonies/biofilms than in control samples. Hair transplant for acne scars: an innovative approach

SummaryPostacne scarring is a common entity that affects patients both physically and psychologically. Treatment of facial scarring is rarely a mono-dimensional process. Various modalities of treatments from cheaper subcision, punch techniques and excision to expensive laser resurfacing techniques are available. Treatment of postacne scars in a particular case has to be individualized, taking into consideration many factors like age, gender, types of scarring, Fitzpatrick skin type, and socioeconomic status of the patient. In this article, we describe an innovative method of simply doing hair transplantation in acne scars and hence making them less visible and cosmetically well acceptable to the patient. Those Rare Occasions When a Big Zit Goes Away Over Night….

Those Rare Occasions When a Big Zit Goes Away Over Night….

Wow, those are the best ones, aren’t they?  I’m enjoying such a spectacle today. Let me summarize.  The past week has been extremely taxing and stressful on me. Work has been beyond busy and stress-inducing, and there are a couple other factors out of my control that have recently happened as well that have put my husband and I in a tight spot financially. Nothing we can’t pull out of though, as I’m the eternal optimist when it comes to the power of humanity’s ability to problem solve when they are put under the gun.  The work thing is just that – work. And I was able to finally put that into perspective as well. My dreams have been very strange – full of anxiety situations and also of problem solving situations, which I know is a direct result of the stressors that have been occurring lately.  So, inevitably, and surprisingly late, I found a large cyst-like zit form on my face literally in one day. It was painful too. The skin that you saw as a red place on your face even though it had not come to any kind of head, it was just a large area full [...] read more..

Nuances in the Management of Rhinophyma

Facial plast Surg 2012; 28: 231-237DOI: 10.1055/s-0032-1309304Rhinophyma is a cosmetically disfiguring disease of the external nose that most frequently affects elderly Caucasian males. Frequently, there is associated derangement of nasal airway patency. Although the true incidence of rhinophyma and its exact etiology remain unknown, it is widely believed to represent the final stage in a continuum of acne rosacea. Medical therapy has not been effective in reversing the disease process, and surgery remains the most accepted method of treating rhinophyma. A wide variety of surgical techniques have been developed and modified over the years in an effort to treat this disorder safely and without significant sequelae.
