A devastating loss for parents occurred when a man who was twenty years old, still at the mercy of teen-like angst over his embarrassing uncontrollable blushing condition, committed suicide. His parents blamed it squarely on his chronic skin-redenning condition in which he could not control constantly becoming red in the face. The man himself [...] read more..

Here's an interesting concept -- some researchers believe that the skin has it's own biological clock. Actually, it's probably more accurately described as an "internal clock." As if we don’t have enough to worry about when taking the various acne medications out there which are readily available, there are some new ones I learned about and never even heard of until I read this. They had to do with some known side effects of the most commonly prescribed acne medication – any number of antibiotics that are used to help clear acne, as well as another side effect of the already side effect-ridden isotretinoin otherwise popularly known as Accutane. As you well know by now if you’ve been reading my blog, I’ve always advocated more natural approaches to treating acne, not only externally with natural cleansers with naturally active ingredients, but also by using things like herbal supplements and dietary changes to help internally treat the underlying conditions that cause acne. Antibiotics that are used to treat acne were found to cause unexplained sore throats in the patients that use them. At least more often than they had them before they started on the medication, which strongly infers that the reason for their sore throats was the medication and not some other outlying circumstance. In my opinion, long term antibiotic use can be dangerous because it [...] read more..

I hope you learned a lot about acne this month, about what causes it and, most importantly, how to treat it. I personally have used this month to reevaluate what's working for my skin, and what's not. For example, I've made it a point to put sunscreen on (nearly) every day. But there are still a few things I could do better. Like I could stop popping pimples (hey, I don't do it all the time but occasionally I just can't help myself.)...Read Full Post read more..

Authors: Kwon HH, Yoon JY, Hong JS, Jung JY, Park MS, Suh DH Abstract Recent studies have suggested that dietary factors, specifically glycaemic load, may be involved in the pathogenesis of acne. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical and histological effects on acne lesions of a low glycaemic load diet. A total of 32 patients with mild to moderate acne were randomly assigned to either a low glycaemic load diet or a control group diet, and completed a 10-week, parallel dietary intervention trial. Results indicate successful lowering of the glycaemic load. Subjects within the low glycaemic group demonstrated significant clinical improvement in the number of both non-inflammatory and inflammatory acne lesions. Histopathological examination of skin samples revealed severa... read more..
DiscussionAcromegaly is caused by abnormal growth hormone and IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) after the growth plates are closed. It is called gigantism if it occurs when the growth plates are open and causes increased linear growth. Acromegaly, since it acts on closed growth plates, shows other physical signs including frontal bossing, prognathism, coarse facial features, macrocephaly, moderate obesity, thickened skin, thickened fingers and toes, hyperhidrosis and other problems. If the IGF-1 exposure is prolonged other problems occur such as cardiac hypertrophy and osteoarthritis. Benign tumors are also relatively common with acromegaly, but increased risk of malignancies is controversial. Acromegaly usually occurs in the 3rd decade but gigantism can occur at any age prior to growt... read more..

Abstract Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is a well-known acne-inducing factor which causes inflammatory skin lesions by enhancing cytokine production through toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2). Green tea extract catechin has been documented to possess anti-inflammatory effects. However, little is known about the mechanisms involved or any direct effect of green tea catechin on acne. The present study investigated the therapeutic effects and mechanism of polyphenon-60, also known as green tea catechin compound, on acne in vitro and in vivo. In a clinical study using topical polyphenon-60 treatment, acne patients showed symptomatic improvement with decrease in the number of comedos and pustules. To investigate the mechanism underlying the activity of polyphenon-60 in acne thera...MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors read more..
